“You were gone for a while.” Reed’s voice echoed through the trees on Kane’s right.  The man wasn’t in sight, but Kane guessed he was farther than the voice indicated.

“Lucius, you sure we should be doing this? The body has been down there for a year. It’ll be a mess and I don’t want to pick it up.”
LINDSAY DOWNS (Regency Romance)
The sound of a hammer being cocked fully back brought him back to reality. Releasing the reins he raised his arms.

Within seconds of him (Vidal) pulling Juan and their mounts through a gap in the bushes lining the road two horsemen came thundering round the corner and pulled up sharply.
